January 2026 Snowpack Update

The snowpack across the Western United States continues to have a rough winter season.

Areas in the Northern Rockies are outperforming other regions thanks to colder temperatures and somewhat consistent snowfall. The Pacific Northwest, along with the Central and Southern Rockies, are still waiting for a series of significant storms for any hope of having a late-season comeback.

The map below shows the percentage of snowpack compared to the 1991-2020 median snowpack for January 27, 2026.

Blue is well above normal, green and yellow are near to below normal, and red is well below normal. This map is based on the weight of the snow on the ground, measured by automated backcountry weather stations called SNOTEL.
