December 2025 Snowpack Update

The snowpack across the Western United States isn't doing so well.
California and the Northern Rockies are outperforming other regions thanks to a train of storms in late December. The Central and Southern Rockies will need to wait until the next round of significant storms to have any hope of crawling back.
The map below shows the percentage of snowpack compared to the 1991-2020 median snowpack for December 28, 2025.
Blue is well above normal, green and yellow are near to below normal, and red is well below normal. This map is based on the weight of the snow on the ground, measured by automated backcountry weather stations called SNOTEL.
