How To Read Clouds Above Treeline

When you're above treeline in the summer, using your eyes is a key way to stay safe. To find approaching storm clouds you'll usually look to the southwest, west, or northwest and you'll want to determine if the clouds look like Arnold Schwarzenegger.

If you see clouds that are tall with well-defined edges, that's our definition of an Arnold Schwarzenegger cloud. A flabby cloud is usually not indicative of a strong or developing thunderstorm. But if you see a large, well-defined cloud with a dark bottom (the darkness is due to the thickness of the cloud blocking sunlight), then this cloud may present a danger to you.
